New Residents

Goodbye June, hello July. It might be halfway though the month already, but I haven't posted a blog yet so, as far as I'm concerned, that opening line plays. To me, July has always brought sunshine, fireworks and Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating contest. As chocked-full as that list already is, I'm going to have to make room for one more July activity - new residents!

At the start of July most hospitals boot out their old GPRs and bring in a new herd. While it's sad to see the old docs leave, it's kind of cool that I get to watch as these guys branch out and continue on into all of these different faucets of dentistry. Just to give you a feel for it, I know that at least two dentists went on to associate at private practices, one started his own practice, and two more went on to corporate offices. The GP that started his own was even nice enough to give me his contact info if I ever wanted to shadow him at his new office.

Back at the hospital, the new residents have been nothing but friendly. I was able to sit-in on temporary crown placement and an extraction this week. Extractions aren't normally my favorite, but this one was actually really cool - I got to hold the suction steady while the doc worked. Not to brag or anything, but the patient said that I was the best suction-holder this side of the Mississippi (he actually just said good job, but I'd like to think that he was just paraphrasing).

I also got to peek at some of the trays that were sitting in the lab. I've seen some of the old residents do impressions, but I've never actually seen the final product. It normally either gets the go-ahead and gets taken to the lab or (more commonly) it doesn't get the nod and the doc has to do the whole process over again. Anyways, I got permission to snap a shot of these trays so I figured I'd include it in the blog. I should have asked one of the dentists what exactly the impressions were for. They don't look like they have any teeth in them, so I'm guessing dentures? I'll have to ask next week.

                                       Some Off-the-Chain Impressions

I don't really feel like doing a whole concluding paragraph, so I guess you can just chalk this blog  up as a cliffhanger. Call me JD Salinger.
